Where did you start your ACCA studies?

I decided to start with the Foundations level awards as it was the perfect starting point for me as I wanted a career in accountancy. The Foundations level does exactly as the name implies, it gives you the necessary knowledge to prepare you for the next level. In my opinion it provides you with a solid foundation to progress.

What is your current role?

I currently work for Hilton Barbados Resort as a credit manager.

Do you have any advice for potential ACCA students?

Sometimes I found it was a challenge to balance work with my personal life and studying. Planning is crucial to achieve a good work/life balance, which is why it’s important to make sure you find time to properly plan your study schedule.

When I’m not studying, I like to socialise with my close friends, either by watching a good movie or going to the beach. But this would be difficult if I didn’t plan properly because studying for the exams does take a lot of time.

Also, I believe that having a good tuition provider is important to help with your exams, which is why I attended evening classes at Prestige Accounting, Barbados. The tutors are there to provide you with help and guidance and to share the knowledge they have, but be prepared to do a lot of work on your own.

Where do you see yourself in five years' time?

In five years’ time I am hoping to be fully ACCA qualified, which will hopefully open up more opportunities for career advancement at my company. My dream accountancy role is to be the financial controller of a reputable company.

If anyone asked me if starting at Foundations level was worth it, I would definitely say yes!
